Healthcare Technology Leaders Identify Staffing Resources as Top Barrier to IT, According to New HIMSS Report

For the first time in years, information technology (IT) leaders at healthcare organizations did not identify a lack of financial support for IT as an obstacle to implementation; instead, concerns about staffing resources was cited as the key barrier to IT.  According to the 23rd Annual HIMSS Leadership Survey, released today, one-quarter of respondents said adequate staffing resources within their organizations is the top barrier to IT implementation and approximately two-thirds of respondents said their IT staff will increase in the next year.  Leading areas in which survey respondents require staff are in the areas of clinical decision support, network and architecture support and clinical informatics professionals.

Online Tool Offers Critical Pathway for Providers to Meet ICD-10 Deadline
HIMSS and AHIMA  introduce the ICD-10 Critical Pathway for Getting Started – 2012 and Beyond.  This free, online tool appears in the HIMSS ICD-10 PlayBook and targets providers, small or large, ambulatory clinic or acute care hospital, that have not yet begun ICD-10 planning and implementation. The timeline will be part of the presentation at the 2012 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibtion’s ICD-10 Symposium, and also, at the AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Summit in April, 2012.
 Developed jointly, the timeline details steps healthcare providers must follow in the next 20 months (February 2012- October 2013) to meet the ICD-10 compliance deadline of October 1, 2013.  The two organizations have developed these steps to help providers reach the compliance date by following the steps in the critical path tool. (more)

Hospitals Continue to Move toward Meeting Stage 1 of Meaningful Use
New HIMSS Analytics data, reported in the December 2011 Summary of Meaningful Use Readiness, indicates  certain segments of hospitals show increased capability to achieve Stage 1 of meaningful use. (more)

HIMSS Announces the 2012 mHealth Summit
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)  announced today that the 2012 mHealth Summit will take place Dec. 3 -5 at  the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Washington D.C. The theme for the fourth annual summit is “Connecting the Mobile Health Ecosystem.” The mHealth Summit, a well-respected international conference, exhibition and networking event, is the largest gathering focused solely on the intersection of health and mobile information technology.

HIMSS Calls for Maintaining October 1, 2013 ICD-10 Implementation Deadline for Most Healthcare Entities

ICD-10 represents one of the most comprehensive projects in healthcare today with far-reaching impacts throughout the healthcare delivery system. An added layer of complexity involves the implementation of other significant programs, such as Meaningful Use and 5010, in a similar period of time.  In light of these multiple requirements, HIMSS has polled the provider community to ascertain ICD-10 readiness.
